BMW-Toyota tech partnership bears fruit

Well it appears the Toyota-BMW collaborative effort has given birth to a new model: the Toyota Verso multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) with a BMW 1.6 liter turbo diesel engine.

While a Europe-only model, the upcoming launch of the Toyota Verso in early 2014 signifies the concrete result of the cooperation between the two automotive manufacturers; both of which have their respective specialties. The Verso will benefit from 113 PS of power and 270 Nm of torque from the 1.6 turbo diesel; the same engine found in the BMW 116d.

Back in December 2011, Toyota and BMW announced a long term partnership to share and develop their respective engine technologies. BMW brought its experience to the table with their leading diesel engines for the Japanese automaker while Toyota will share their successful hybrid technologies for their German partner.

The BMW-powered Verso is only the beginning for the collaboration between Toyota and BMW. The two companies are currently working to co-develop a fuel cell system, work together to creating lightweight vehicle body technologies, undertake research into lithium-air batteries and, most exciting of all, conduct a feasibility study for the joint development of a sportscar platform.

The sportscar is widely speculated to be the successor to the Supra for Toyota and the Z5 for BMW, along with rumors about the Z3, 6 Series, MRS and even the Lexus SC. The upcoming Supra successor may have Toyota hybrid technology.
