All-new Montero Sport arrives in the Philippines

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) has officially launched the 2016 Montero Sport featuring a redesigned exterior and an upgraded tech.

As a review, the all-new Montero Sport made its global debut at the Big Motor Sale in Bangkok, Thailand last August 2015. In line with this, MMPC said that the Philippines is the fourth country to release the 2016 Montero Sport.

Aesthetically, one can instantly notice that the 2016 Montero Sport has undergone a makeover. It now has a sharper, more aggressive and bolder exterior as compared to the outgoing model. Up front, it is fitted with the brand’s ‘Dynamic Shield’ grille, a large bumper and prominent wheel arches. According to MMPC, all Montero Sport variants, except for the base GLS model, are fitted with LED headlights and daytime running lights.

Turning at the side, the 2016 Montero Sport is characterized by sharp lines and comes with slimmer windows. The vehicle sits on 18-inch wheels and tires but, if you want a more aggressive stance, the Montero Sport GT variant has a two-tone alloy wheel design. The rear, on the other hand, is equipped with tube-type LED combination taillights, a chrome bar and a muscular fender.

In terms of size, the 2016 Montero Sport measures 4785mm long, 1815mm wide and 1805mm tall with a wheelbase of 2800mm.

The interior of the 2016 Montero Sport has been restyled as seen in its black cabin theme and the monotone dashboard with silver and wood accents. It also has a new four-spoke multi-function steering wheel, an updated multimedia entertainment system and an improved sound insulation which is said to significantly reduce interior noise. The vehicle also has an improved Super-Select II 4WD system which features a dial type selector. It also includes the ability to lock the center and rear differential independently, or both simultaneously. Finally, preset terrain modes (mud, gravel, rocks, sand) are selected with a toggle button.

In addition, the 2016 Montero Sport is equipped with a ‘capacitive discharge touchscreen’ monitor, DVD and MP3 player, tuner, auxiliary-in and USB ports, iPod-ready capability, Bluetooth connectivity and a smart phone mirror link feature.

Safety-wise, MMPC says the 2016 Montero Sport features a Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (R.I.S.E.) body which ensures the safety of all passengers. MMPC adds that the body structure’s crumple zones effectively absorbs and dispenses crash energy from all directions, completely protecting the interior cabin. Driver and passengers are fully protected in the event of a collision with the 7-airbags system. With this, the 2016 Montero Sport was given 5-star rating for the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) and also the Latin NCAP.

The all-new Montero Sport now features the Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) system and Blind Spot Warning (BSW) for the top of the line variant. The FCM detects risk for collision and the system provides both audible and visual warning to alert the threat to the driver. If the driver does not react, the system will automaticalle apply the brakes to mitigate a collision. Other variants of the 2016 Montero Sport comes with Hill Start Assist feature.

Under the hood, the 2016 Montero Sport is powered by a 2.4-liter 4N15 MIVEC diesel engine that delivers 181 PS at 3500 rpm and 430 Nm of torque at 2500 rpm. The engine can be mated to an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.

Of note, MMPC said that the all-new Montero Sport, produced at Mitsubishi Motors Thailand, will be introduced in more than ninety countries from around the globe, including Asia, ASEAN, Oceania, East Europe, Middle East Africa and Latin America regions among others.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Montero Sport is available in seven body colors: Sedona Red, Mystic Blue, Virgil Gray, Savanna White, Pyrenese Black, Sterling Silver Metallic and Deep Bronze Metallic.
