BMW has announced that they will build a racing wheelchair for the U.S. Paralympics Track and Field team, which will be used at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The German automaker said that they will collaborate with the U.S. Paralympics Track and Field team to develop the equipment. BMW adds that the racing wheelchair will be made of carbon fiber and have a redesigned chassis, improved aerodynamics, enhanced athlete restraint as well as steering and braking advancements.

BMW North America Vice President of Marketing Trudy Hardy said that the company is committed to advancing athletic performance through technology transfer initiatives.

“Over the course of our partnership with Team USA, we have been committed to advancing athletic performance through technology transfer initiatives which help to address their training and equipment needs,” said Hardy.

Nearly one year in development, BMW's racing wheelchair is set to be delivered to the U.S. Paralympics Track and Field team in early 2016.
