All-new Mazda MX-5 RF, turbocharged CX-9 arrive in Southeast Asia

Mazda has officially expanded their model lineup in the ASEAN region after unveiling the 2017 MX-5 RF and the turbocharged CX-9 midsize crossover in Singapore.

Beginning with the 2017 CX-9, the all-new seven-seater crossover is their latest model to receive the Kodo – Soul of Motion design language and SkyActiv chassis/powertrain. First making its world debut at the 2015 Los Angeles Motor Show, the crossover gets a more sophisticated front fascia reminscent of the recently updated Mazda6 and Mazda3.

A new set of five-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in low-profile tires dominate the side while the rear gets sleek wraparound taillights with chrome trim. Also seen at the back is the revised tailgate that comes with a spoiler, dual exhaust pipes and extra chrome trim on the rear bumper.

Size-wise, the new CX-9 now measures 5,065mm long which makes it 30mm shorter than the outgoing model. On the other hand, the wheelbase has been extended by 55mm for better rear legroom and easier ingress/egress to the third row.

Inside, Mazda's latest human-machine interface (HMI) makes its way in the CX-9. It gets the familiar infotainment system with touchscreen capability, center console controls, splashes of aluminum trim, a three-pod instrument cluster and leather upholstery.

Propelling the new CX-9 is a turbocharged 2.5-liter SkyActiv inline-four. It generates 230 PS along with 420 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox that drives all four wheels.

Mazda indicated however that the CX-9 will not be made available in the Singaporean market.

Moving to the MX-5 RF, the 'Retractable Fastback' is Mazda's latest addition in the MX-5 model lineup and allows drivers to enjoy the car with as a coupe or as a targa. As previously mentioned, the rear window can be stowed away automatically with a push of a button at up to speeds of 10 km/h.

For those concerned with trunk space, Mazda assured that the retractable hardtop takes only as much space as the soft top's mechanism.

Providing power is the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G inline-four that pushes out 160 PS and 200 Nm of torque. Available transmissions include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

There is no word yet from Mazda Philippines if they will be releasing the MX-5 RF and the all-new turbocharged CX-9 here in the country.
