Euro-spec Toyota Yaris gets refreshed for 2017 model year

Shortly following the debut of the new 1.5-liter engine for the Euro-spec hatchback, Toyota recently revealed the 2017 Yaris refresh. Sporting an updated look both inside and out, the Euro Yaris gets a revised front and rear, as well as a more refined interior design.

According to the automaker, the 2017 Yaris has received more than 900 new parts which aim to improve its design, performance and safety. The body itself was penned by Toyota's ED2 design studio in France. Compared to the pre-facelift model, the front fascia gets a new front grill and redesigned foglights with metal accents. In addition, new headlights were put on as well and come with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) on high-trim models.

The two-tone paint has been carried-over from the outgoing model but receives what looks to be a fresh set of alloy wheels and wider side skirts. The rear, on the other hand, has been fitted with new LED taillights, bigger wing and bumper.

Overall, the design of the 2017 Yaris closely resembles the high-performance model that the company recently revealed last January.

Over to the interior, Toyota claimed they went for the 'fresh and modern' approach by introducing new upholsteries, colors, trim pieces and revising the ergonomics and displays of the 2017 Yaris. Depending on the model, the cabin can be specified in a wide array of upholstery and color combinations. With the Bi-Tone versions, the interior can be decked out in a variety of hues like blue with blue/black, burgundy with red/black and black with black/white as such.

The instrument panel gets new gauges that flank a 4.2-inch TFT multi-info display (only available in Mid grade and above). Other equipment features that can be found in the 2017 Yaris are: leather steering wheel, soft-touch instrument panel, propeller-style aircon vents, blue-lighting for the instruments, updated center console and new interior switches.

As mentioned earlier, it is now powered by a new 1.5-liter inline-four that meets Euro6 fuel standards. It is rated at 111 PS and has a pulling power of 136 Nm at 4400 rpm. Compared to the older 1.3, the bigger 1.5 allows the 2017 Yaris to sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in 11 seconds, 0.8 seconds quicker than before. Beyond that, the new motor also benefits from the following: VVT-iE which automatically switches between Otto and Atkinson cycles depending on engine load, cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), water cooled exhaust manifold and a 13.5:1 compression ratio.

In addition, the new 1.5-liter mill is part of Toyota's Economy with Superior Thermal Efficiency (ESTEC) family of engines. Aside from providing better thermal efficiency, the new engine also aims to deliver better fuel consumption than the 1.3. The engine is currently being produced by Toyota Motor Industries Poland as part of a EUR 150 million production investment.

As for safety, the 2017 Yaris comes with Toyota Safety Sense as standard. With it, the refreshed B-segment hatchback gets the following safety tech: pre-collision assist, autonomous emergency braking, automatic high beam, lane departure alert and road sign assist.
