Honda reveals the dynamically-styled 2016 Civic

It's official, the tenth-generation Honda Civic has just made its world debut in Los Angeles, California. Featuring an 'all-new and dynamically styled' exterior and two new VTEC engines including a turbocharged unit, the all-new Civic plans to recapture the sporty characteristic of the compact while at the same time deliver a safe and fuel-efficient drive.

“This tenth-generation Civic is quite simply the most ambitious remake of Civic we've ever done. We are bringing more new technology and innovative thinking to Civic than ever before to establish a new benchmark for fun-to-drive performance, fuel efficiency, safety performance and refinement in the compact class,” said John Mendel, Executive Vice President of American Honda Motor Co, Inc.

It gets a new body and chassis design that were specifically tailored for the new sporty engines. Despite its larger size, the 2016 Civic is 30 kg lighter as 12% of the body was constructed from ultra high-strength steel. Aside from being more lightweight, the use of the said steel allowed for a 25% improvement on torsional rigidity as well.

Compared to the current-generation, the 2016 Civic now conforms to Honda's current design language, with the front bearing the brand's 'Solid Wing Face' that is paired up with tapered LED headlights with daytime running lights, contoured front fenders, sculpted hood and a new bumper.

Over to the side, the silhouette has been heavily revised and now features a fastback-style tail. It is then spruced up by sleek and swept-back character lines and new alloy wheels. The rear section on the other hand has restyled taillights that now extend over to the trunk, a new rear bumper and revamped trunk design.

Exact dimension figures were not yet provided but Honda did state that 2016 Civic is nearly 51mm wider and 25mm lower than the outgoing model. In addition, its wheelbase has been extended by 30mm.

The cabin according to Honda provides better space along with an improved rear legroom. Driver visibility was made even better as the company used new ultra-thin front roof pillars. It has a lowered floor which allows for a more sporty driving position added Honda.

In terms of comforts and trim, the 2016 Civic has a more premium tone according to Honda. It gets premium fabric seats, a one-piece soft-touch instrument panel, new full-color TFT instrument panel and piano black finish and silver bezels on the center console. High-grade variants on the other hand will get 8-way power adjustable driver's seat, 4-way power adjustable front passenger's seat and heated side mirrors.

NVH was vastly improved as well after Honda applied a flush-mounted acoustic glass windshield, a more tightly sealed engine compartment and triple-sealed doors.

Two new engines will be available for the 2016 Civic: a 2.0-liter VTEC inline-four and and a 1.5-liter turbocharged, direct injection VTEC inline-four. Output figures were not yet revealed, but Honda claimed that the two engines will be able to deliver high performance along with improved fuel economy.

Transmissions available for the 2.0-liter lump include a 6-speed manual and a Continuosly Variable Transmission (CVT). The turbocharged 1.5-liter on the other hand will exclusively be mated with the CVT.

Other new technical features present on the 2016 Civic include: redesigned front struts, new multi-link rear suspension and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility.
