No specific models yet, European models get it earlier
Audi has just finalized a deal with Apple to offer CarPlay in models released starting 2015 in Europe and arrive in North American dealerships a year later.
Apple’s CarPlay, which we reported here, will complement the Audi Multi Media Interface (MMI) and will make using an iOS device much simpler and seamless.
Using the vehicle’s built-in controls the driver will have access to phone functions like Messages, Maps and Music minimizing distraction.
Drivers can switch between CarPlay features and Audi MMI features with just the flick of a switch.
No word yet though from Audi as to which models will come with CarPlay preinstalled at the dealerships.
This does not in any way affect the partnership Audi has with Google in also offering Android Auto in future models.
"Our customers want to be 'always on' and use the services they know from their smartphones in cars as well. In this regard, we are working closely with leading companies like Google and Apple. In the future, customers will be able to use the functions available to them on their smartphones via the operating systems in their cars as well," said Audi board member Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg.
