Audi A6 2.0 TDI sets record for most countries traveled on a single tank

After 14 countries and 1,865 kilometers, Audi, in cooperation with the RAC, have set a new Guinness World Record for the most countries traveled without refueling. The car that helped Audi achieve this record was an A6 2.0 TDI Ultra.

The A6 TDI was driven by British motoring journalists Andrew Frankel and Rebecca Jackson. Apart from being a motoring journalist, Jackson is also a race car driver and aspiring Le Mans competitor. The pair drove the executive sedan almost non-stop for 28 hours through 14 countries. The initial target for the record road trip was 11 countries. The trip started in the Netherlands and continued on to Hungary, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia.

“I’m delighted to be part of the team that has set this record and would like to think it will stand for some time as we eked out every last mile from the A6’s tank. From an endurance point of view the challenge actually proved to be far harder than both Rebecca and I imagined it would be,” said Andrew Frankel.

“I feel Andrew and I have helped the RAC and Audi set a record to be proud of. I’m known for driving pretty fast, but this challenge was naturally more about maintaining a constant, fuel-efficient speed and not being caught out by vehicles which would cause us to slow down and then accelerate to the optimum speed again. This was an amazing event and a very different long-distance driving challenge to what I’m doing next year when I compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2016,” said Rebecca Jackson.

The Audi A6 TDI used had a 2.0 liter turbodiesel with 190 PS and 400 Nm of torque. In order to hit the target of over 1,000 kilometers on one tank, the team had to average 80 km/h to keep the revs low and steady. Helping the record run is the A6 TDI's 73 liter fuel tank.

Audi claims the A6 2.0 TDI can do 23.7 kilometers per liter but during the record run, the A6 averaged an impressive 26.9 kilometers per liter. In some parts of the trip, the car was consuming as little as 28.3 kilometers per liter.
