Sporty yet spacious, the New Midsize Coupé concept car is a 5-seater.
The New Midsize Coupé concept car from Volkswagen has just made its world premiere at the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.
Showing proportions uncanny for the segment it is in, the New Midsize Coupé concept car is almost as low as it is wide. It is shorter than most midsized Volkswagen models but also wider than the latter making itself appear muscular and sporty and hails the advent of a new compact, saloon class that will slot just below the Passat.
Its 20-inch wheels and a hue that Volkswagen refers to as ‘Dragon Red’ highlight the New Midsize Coupé concept car’s sporty nature.
To make it look more dynamic and poised, Volkswagen used a special design technique called Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) that allowed them to use an ‘avant-garde radiator grille, LED headlights in 3D look and a large lower air inlet’ thus shifting the visual center of gravity downwards all while still using the ‘distinctive chrome signature that is based on Volkswagen design DNA.’
The rear of the New Midsize Coupé concept car also get similar treatment, using a ‘light refracting edge that lowers the visual centre of gravity of the rear body’ along with a rear spoiler and an aerodynamic trailing edge to optimize downforce.
LEDs are used on the headlamps and rear lights.
Inside, the New Midsize Coupé concept car is all about being driver-centric. It has leather sports seats and offers enough space for five people. The silk-colored inner seat surface and the blackened outer areas bring about the contrasting hue in the cabin. The boot can accommodate 500 liters proving its practicality.
The New Midsize Coupé concept car is powered by 2.0L turbo petrol TSI engine mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission that pumps out 220PS and sends it to 100km/h in just 6.5 seconds. It blows off steam through a diffuser with dual exhaust tailpipes that sport a cross-piece that actually connects the two together.
