The BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage makes its world debut at the 2015 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este
After releasing a teaser image of the 3.0 CSL Hommage last May 14, BMW has finally revealed the aforementioned concept car at this year's Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Lake Como, Italy. From the name itself, the concept car pays homage to the brand's original 3.0 CSL coupe of the 1970s (aka Batmobile) but features contemporary styling and modern lightweight materials.
“The BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage represents a nod to the engineering achievement exemplified by the BMW 3.0 CSL in its lightweight design and performance. With intelligent lightweight construction and modern materials, the 3.0 CSL Hommage brings the character of that earlier model into the 21st century, showing it in a new and exciting guise,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.
Much like the original CSL, the new concept car features a similar overall design but features a modern twist. Up front, it features the car's distinct shark-nose along, a large twin kidney grill and sleek laser light LED headlights. The side profile of the Hommage on the other hand has muscular fenders, carbon fiber side skirts and 21-inch alloy wheels. Over to the rear, more styling cues from the original 3.0 CSL can be seen like the large rear wing and the thin LED taillights.
Compared to the 1970 CSL which made use of aluminum, the Hommage uses a plethora of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic that according to BMW, provides optimum power-to-weight ratio and is lighter and stronger than aluminum.
Aboard the 3.0 CSL Hommage, the 2-seater concept coupe has what appears to be a stripped-down driver-focused interior that consist of two lightweight sport seats with six-point harnesses, a digital instrument binnacle, a unique steering wheel with an integrated display that shows the current gear, speed and shift point, a fire extinguishing system and two helmets integrated into the transmission tunnel.
BMW did not detail the exact powertrain of the 3.0 CSL Hommage but they did say that it is driven by a 'powerful' six-cylinder engine that comes with eBoost.
There is also no word if BMW will push through with a production version of the 3.0 CSL Hommage.
