BMW is certainly working on new ways for customers to enjoy their products' driving abilities by revealing a new line of diesel powered M cars.

Kicking off the new lineup will be the BMW M550d xDrive Sedan, the BMW M550d xDrive Touring, the BMW X5 M50d and the BMW X6 M50d.

Touring

All these new cars make use of BMW's latest inline six cylinder diesel engine with triple turbochargers, common rail direct injection with piezo injectors and maximum injection pressure of 2,200 bar. The new 3.0-liter engine will produce a maximum of 381 PS and a maximum torque of 740 Newton metres. BMW have worked to produce instantaneous response and dynamic power delivery into the upper reaches of the rev range and maximum revs at 5,400 rpm.

Coupled with the new drivetrain will be fuel economy expected of BMW's latest diesels, further optimized by BMW's EfficientDynamics technology including the Auto Start-Stop function and ECO PRO mode. The new range will also get the latest 8-speed automatic transmission.

M division also set out to work on tuning the suspension, bodyshell mounting, engine and transmission mounts, springs and dampers, all standard and optional chassis control systems, and the Servotronic mapping for the hydraulic steering. The result, BMW claims, is significantly enhanced agility and precision in dynamic driving situations, with the linear build-up of lateral forces familiar from M cars.

Acceleration figures for the new diesel M cars are impressive. The BMW M550d sedan can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, while the Touring can do it in 4.9 seconds. The BMW X5 M50d does it in 5.4 seconds, while the X6 M50d takes just 5.3 seconds.
