BMW releases official statement denying use of "defeat devices"

Following the release of Auto Bild's report the X3 20d emissions, BMW has issued an official statement saying that the company does not use defeat devices similar to those found in Volkswagen Group cars.

Auto Bild has since retracted the story but had affected BMW's stock prices, bringing it down 8% when the report was initially published. BMW has since regained 5% of its market value since the magazine issued a clarification and an apology to the car maker.

Diesels represent 38% of BMW sales worldwide with 80% of cars sold in Europe equipped with the said engines. 73% of BMW's sold in Germany are diesels while BMW USA's diesel sales account for 6% in the total units sold .

BMW N47D20 engine

The engine powering the X3 20d is the N47D20 which is fitted to popular models such as the 320d, 318d and 520d. As the name implies, it is BMW's 2.0 liter, turbodiesel engine and power outputs range from 143 PS (118d) to 218 PS (325d).

In their statement, BMW said that their diesel engine passed the same test by the ICCT, the environmental organization that reported the emission discrepancies in Volkswagen TDI engines. “Two studies carried out by the ICCT have confirmed that the BMW X5 and 13 other BMW vehicles tested comply with the legal requirements concerning NOx emissions. No discrepancies were found in the X5 between laboratory-test and field-test NOx emissions.” says BMW.

BMW is now questioning the publication on how the results of the emission tests were gotten. In their statement, BMW says, "We are not familiar with the test results mentioned by Auto Bild on 24 September concerning the emissions of a BMW X3 during a road test. No specific details of the test have yet been provided and therefore we cannot explain these results. We are contacting the ICCT and asking for clarification of the test they carried out." The company also said that their cars are available for testing any time.
