New generation Honda CR-V slated for potential 2017 Philippine release

If you're in the market for a new crossover in 2017, it seems a new model will be joining the ranks.

Honda, it appears, is working on bringing in the new generation CR-V to the Philippine market next year. The news stems from the concurrence of none other than Mr. Toshio Kuwahara, president and general manager of Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) when AutoIndustriya asked if the crossover will indeed arrive next year.

The fifth generation Honda CR-V was unveiled earlier this year by Honda of America. The all-new model features an entirely new design with premium interiors. The vehicle is larger overall, and gets more cabin space and legroom due to the 40mm wheelbase extension.

The all-new CR-V comes with either a 2.4-liter straight-4 (carryover engine) or a 1.5-liter turbocharged i-VTEC engine that makes 190 horsepower; a model that's more powerful than the version in the Civic RS. The CR-V gets a continuously variable transmission, or CVT.

Honda of America announced that the CR-V will be available with a suite of advanced intelligent safety technologies under the Honda Sensing banner such as Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Information, Rear Cross Traffic monitor, and Auto High Beam headlights. Also expected are advanced multimedia systems that include support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The CR-V is one of Honda's best selling models since the nameplate's introduction in 1995. The current, fourth generation CR-V was launched in 2012, featuring 5 seats (with a removable third row as an optional accessory), 2.4 and 2.0 liter engine options with front and four-wheel drive, respectively.

There was no mention by HCPI's president of potential specifications or possible pricing points, but it is expected that the fifth generation CR-V will have just five seats like the international model. Given HCPI's pricing strategy in every category, expect the CR-V to be at the higher end of the spectrum in its class.
