Ford pays homage to the #2 GT40 driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon
The Blue Oval brand recently commemorated the 50th anniversary of its victory in the 1966 Le Mans after unveiling a limited edition GT. Called the 66' Heritage Edition, it pays tribute to the #2 GT40 Mark II that was driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon.
“Celebrating the anniversary of Ford’s historic victories at Le Mans has always been a part of the return of the Ford GT. The 2017 Ford GT ’66 Heritage Edition is a stunning tribute to the car that kicked off Ford’s string of Le Mans victories in 1966,” Raj Nair, executive vice president in product development at Ford.
Immediately seen on the special edition GT is the Shadow Black paint which can be specified in either gloss or matte finish. Providing a stark contrast to the dark hue are the Frozen White graphics which is seen on the doors and hood. A new of set of 20-inch one-piece forged aluminum alloy wheels complete the exterior décor of the Heritage Edition GT.
The cabin relatively carries over from standard GT models apart from some key revisions. For starters, the carbon fiber seats, pillars, headlining and instrument panel are all upholstered in Ebony leather. Meanwhile the headrests and steering wheel feature the GT logo. Gold accents on the instrument panel, seat's X-brace and paddle shifters deliver an air of sophistication to the limited-run GT.
As a direct nod to the original #2 GT40 Mark II race car, it gets leather-wrapped steering wheel and seat belts that feature a unique blue webbing. In addtion, All Heritage Edition cars will have a serialized identification plate which will be placed on the dashboard.
Powering the limited edition Ford GT will still be the highly-tuned 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 that puts out more than 600 PS.
“While the looks are distinctly based on the GT40 Mark II race car,” he says, “we’ve accentuated new styling cues to provide a modern interpretation,” said Garen Nicholson, exterior design manager for the 66' Heritage Edition.
The Ford GT 66' Heritage Edition can now be viewed at FordGT.com with the use of the configuration tool. It will be made available to the market come 2017.
