All-new Ford S-Max gets the Intelligent Speed Limiter

Ford has just revealed a new type of cruise control that is currently available on the new 2015 S-Max in the UK. Called the Intelligent Speed Limiter, this new technology aims to avoid deliberate or accidental overspeeding.

The system works via a camera mounted on the windscreen that monitors road signs and checks the speed limit on a particular road. When it detects the current speed limit, the system sets the S-Max to the according limit in order to prevent overspeeding.

Ford added that instead of applying the brakes to prevent overspeeding, the system mitigates speed by inhibiting torque by way of electronically adjusting the amount of fuel being used. The Intelligent Speed Limiter can also adjust itself to varying speed limits whether they are higher or lower.

“Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement. Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit,” said Stefan Kappes, Active Safety Supervisor, Ford of Europe.

As stated earlier, it is only available in the all-new S-Max that is currently on sale in the UK.
