New global SUV equipped with self-parking and obstacle avoidance
The Blue Oval brand strengthens its crossover segment once again with the introduction of the Ford Edge Concept which boasts of advanced automated driving technologies like remote or push button self-parking and obstacle avoidance systems.
"The Ford Edge Concept is the latest example of a utility vehicle that delivers the attributes global customers value most - design, fuel efficiency, driving dynamics, and customer-focused technology to help the driver feel more confident," said Joe Hinrichs.
The next-generation Ford Edge will be based on a new Ford global midsize platform in lieu of the current model’s platform shared with the Mazda CX-9. The company is also planning to sell the next-generation crossover to global markets due to increased popularity of utility vehicles in China, Eastern Europe, Russia and South America.
The concept offers a host of high-tech features like push-button and remote operated parking which can be used from inside or outside the car and advanced obstacle avoidance that automatically steers itself away from trouble as a preview of future automated driving technology. Sensor-based driving aids like adaptive steering, lane-keeping system, adaptive cruise control and collision control with brake support, and blind-spot information system already found in current Ford models comes as standard equipment.
"Our engineers around the world are advancing the systems that will ultimately help make drivers smarter, safer and more efficient. From advanced engine systems to collision avoidance and automated driving systems, Ford will continue to lead in delivering the technologies consumers want and need," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president of global product development.
The concept combines sleek athletic exterior design, premium interior finishing, technology, capability and efficiency to "create a global vehicle with technology to make life easier, and design and craftsmanship to appeal to customers around the globe."
The sleek athletic exterior design aims to complement the technologies incorporated in the vehicle. It follows on Ford’s new trapezoid grill look and is further complemented by LED headlamps and tail lamps with integrated daytime running lights and intuitive lighting methods to maintain a laser-thin appearance. The Copper Flame was chosen as the exterior color as a modern interpretation to a popular finish.
Leading its powertrain options will be an EcoBoost engine with start-stop and an active grill shutter technology to help maximize efficiency.
The interior is based on a 'Dynamic Sanctuary' concept which conveys a dynamic, in-motion impression that soothes occupants through elevated craftsmanship, elegant colors and rich materials. Premium features include: leather-wrapped and hand-stitched instrument panel, 10-inch LCD center display, premium wrapping composed of Nubuck, full-grain and smooth leather.
