Six Ford Fiesta cars were taken on a fuel economy challenge recently through Central and Northern Luzon. All six cars were equipped with 1.6-liter engine and the 6-speed PowerShift Transmission.
The route took the group from Manila to Subic via the NLEX and SCTEX, then on to Ilocos Norte through Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, La Union and Ilocos Sur.
Faced with varied driving conditions including heavy rain, detours, one-way roadworks and weekend traffic, the teams reached the destination with fuel eco figures that broke the previous records set by the Fiesta.
The lone sedan in the group driven by Omar Gabrieles and Sherwin Go from Ford Fiesta Club Philippines registered 18.297 kilometers to the liter. The hatchback driven by Ron Delos Reyes (Auto Review) and Angel Rivero (Philippine Star) did 18.829 kilometers to the liter, while Carlo Tirona (C! Magazine) and Enzo Teodoro (C! Magazine) was able to do 19.177 km/l in their hatchback. Inigo Roces (Manila Bulletin) and Vince Pornelos (AutoIndustriya.com) did 19.253 km/l in their Fiesta hatch, while Sharleen Banzon (Top Gear) and Barbara Lorenzo (Top Gear) were able to do the run with an average of 19.545 km/l.
Emerging on top was the group comprised of Dino Directo (Manila Standard Today) and Tessa Salazar (Philippine Daily Inquirer), as their Fiesta set the new numbers by being able to do 23.663 kilometers per liter.
The Ford Fiesta Fuel Economy Run emphasizes the importance of real world driving conditions, and as such did not employ any vehicles to clear the way, and had the airconditioner fixed to the "1" position.
