Affected owners will receive goodwill payment

Ford is lowering its fuel economy ratings for six models after discovering an error with their internal testing.

Approximately 200,000 vehicles are affected in the United States that includes 2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 C-MAX, Fusion and Lincoln MKZ hybrids and 2013-2014 C-MAX Energi and Fusion Energi.

With this, Ford has notified the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and agreed to work together to retest the vehicles in order to determine the correct fuel economy ratings.

Ford said that they reviewed their entire model lineup to determine the vehicles that required further testing and revised the fuel economy ratings for the affected vehicles.

The automaker says their error was specific to a factor called "Total Road Load Horsepower" (TRLHP). Ford says the TRLHP is a "vehicle-specific resistance level used in vehicle dynamometer testing that determines fuel economy ratings." TRLHP is established with engineering models that are validated through vehicle testing.

Ford says the use of engineering models is a common industry practice and consistent with EPA regulations. However, based on the coast down testing of the Fusion Hybrid, Ford discovered the TRLHP didn't match the values used for the dynamometer testing.

The automaker also said that upon further testing they “discovered error specific to how we correlate wind tunnel results into the TRLHP model.”

Ford has now validated the TRLHP for the affected vehicles and will enhance their validation test for future vehicles.

The automaker says the affected owners in the United States will receive a goodwill payment that ranges from USD 125 (about PHP 5,480) to USD 1,050 (about PHP 46,000), depending on the model and whether it was leased or bought.
