More tech for 2016 Montero Sport
2015 was the year of the pick-up, with Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota coming out with their latest trucks this year. 2016 on the other hand is shaping up to be the year of the PPV or pickup platform vehicles with Mitsubishi starting the new year with the all-new Montero Sport.
Last month, Mitsubishi launched a website for the new PPV, allowing potential customers to place an order. The site also shows what's been changed for 2016, from its new exterior to the all-new platform and technologies.
Mitsubishi PH has now revealed the specs and full lineup for the all-new Montero. Much has been said about its new exterior and the 2016 Montero Sport is also the first Mitsubishi in the country to get the new 'Dynamic Shield' corporate grill. Complementing the new corporate look are a pair of slim line headlights, featuring LED daytime running lights and chrome trim that surrounds the large air intake. Instead of using fender extensions, the new model features more sculpted lines, while the rear gets slim, vertically mounted LED tail lights. the new Montero Sport measures 4785 mm long, 1815 mm wide and 1805 mm sitting on a 2800 wheelbase. All variants of the Montero Sport ride on 265/60 R18 wheels. Ground clearance measures at 218 mm while water wading capacity is rated at 700 mm.
The 2016 Montero Sport is available in four variants, namely the GLS 4x2, GLS Premium 4x2, GLS 4WD M/T and the GT. GLS Premium and GLS 4WD models are equipped with a 6.75 inch monitor that serves as the car's infotainment system and seats for these models are trimmed in leather. Other convenience features found in these variants include an electronic parking brake (standard across the range), tilt and telescoping steering wheel adjustment and electronically adjustable seats (GLS Premium and up). The GT model adds a sunroof, electronic seat adjustment for the front passenger, bespoke alloy wheels and sportier interior trim.
Mitsubishi is offering just one engine for the popular PPV — the new 4N15 — a 2.4 liter turbodiesel features the company's clean diesel technology and designed to run on Euro 4 diesel. The arrival of the new model also signals the first application of MIVEC (Mitsubishi's variable valve timing) in a diesel engine in the country. The combination of MIVEC, variable geometry turbo and common rail direct injection gives the new engine an output of 181 PS and 430 Nm of torque. The GLS 4WD is mated to a six speed manual transmission, while the rest of the range gets a class-first eight speed automatic transmission. Four wheel drive models come with Super Select 4WD-II with off-road mode. Off-Road Mode comes with four settings; gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand and Rock crawl.
Safety features found in the new Montero Sport include Forward Collision Mitigation system (GT), Blind Spot Warning system, 8 SRS Airbags, Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist, Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control and Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution.
