Upcoming Hyundai SUV nods to Hawaiian inspiration

Hyundai has just announced that a new B-segment SUV will be joining the family line up, called the Kona. The Kona is expected to slot below the Tuscon in Europe once sales begin this year. Hyundai's latest SUV takes it name from the Kona district in the Big Island of Hawaii. Hyundai says that the island's energetic image and unique lifestyle matches that of the SUV's dynamic character.

As seen in the lone teaser photo, the Kona is set to use a two-tier headlight design with the top part possibly being the day-time running lights and the bottom half housing the actual headlights. A small part of Hyundai's cascading grille, found on almost all Hyundai models now, can also be seen. The teaser photo shows the Kona wearing a shiny red coat of paint, which further helps emphasize it's supposed alive and dynamic character.

Since technical specifications have not yet been released, it is not sure as to which platform the Kona will ride on. Supposedly, it will ride on a modified platform borrowed from the i20 supermini and powered by an engine from the i30.

No details have been released as well regarding when the wraps will be taken off the Kona, but it does mention that additional news will be released in the future. And with the Creta having been just officially released locally at the recently concluded Manila International Auto Show, we will have to wait and see as to where the Kona will slit in between the newly release Creta B-segment crossover.
