Lamborghini launches carbon fiber research facility in Seattle

Lamborghini plans on furthering the capabilities of carbon fiber and other composites after the Italian automaker opened the Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory (ACSL) in Seattle, Washington. Dedicated to experiment and unlock new potentials in composite production, the facility will be a key player for Lamborghini's production of future automobiles.

“Carbon fiber is a material that Lamborghini has a long history with. Starting with the Countach Quattrovalvole and continuing today, it is one of the most important keys to the success of our cars in the past, present and future,” said Stefano Domenicalli, CEO of Lamborghini.

One of the key contributions made by ACSL is Forged Composite ®. This technology allowed Lamborghini to shorten the production time required to form the components. This technique was first used on the 2010 Sesto Elemento concept. Further research allowed Lamborghini to refine its manufacturing process for structural and aesthetic application in 2013.

Lamborghini decided to set up shop in Seattle due to the city's strategic collaboration in developing carbon fiber components in aeronautics and automobiles. In fact, Boeing also has a close collaboration with the city.

“Seattle is a nexus for innovation and Lamborghini's choice to base its carbon fiber research center here reflects that. Lamborghini's Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory, their continued success in developing breakthrough technology, and their collaboration with Boeing is a benefit and a point of pride for the city and the state of Washington,” said Jay Inslee, Washington State governor.

Currently, ACSL is hiring young engineers from around the world who are interested in composite production.
