Supposed next-gen Toyota Prius to have two variants

More Toyota leaks seem to be coming out as what appears to be the next-gen Prius that has yet to make its 2016 debut. Now made to look sleeker, the 2016 Prius will apparently be available in two models and will be longer and lower than the previous generation.

Dimension-wise, the next-gen hybrid retains its height but now measures 4,550mm long and 1770mm wide (previous 4,480mm long, 1,745mm wide). The Prius painted in blue is supposedly the standard hybrid variant and features a Mirai-inspired front fascia which consists of a pronounced grill, vertical LED daytime running lights and tapered headlights.

On the other hand, the aqua-colored Prius is believed to be the plug-in hybrid model and has an exterior design that resembles previous generations of the nameplate. It has A-shaped headlights, a prominent nose, a low-slung grill and triangular foglights.

The two models carry similar side and rear styling, with the former sporting a distinct character line that runs from the doors up to the rear quarter panel. The rear on the other hand has a more radical looking design with vertical wraparound taillights, extended rear windshield area and a redone tailgate.

Even though it still sits on a 2,700mm wheelbase, interior comfort was apparently improved and borrows the cabin layout from the Mirai FCV. No images were provided however.

Powering the 2016 Toyota Prius is a new hybrid system that consist of a 1.8-liter 2ZR-FXZ inline four and an electric motor. The internal combustion engine puts out 105 PS at 5,000 rpm while the electric motor generates 90 PS. Combined, the 2016 Prius is estimated to produce a total output of 150 PS and will have an average fuel consumption of 40km/l.

Delivering power to the wheels will be a Continuously Variable Transmission with a lithium-ion battery pack.
