Lexus introduces the updated 2016 GS with new turbocharged variant

The Lexus LX 570 is not the only nameplate that gets a mid-cycle update as the company also held the global premiere of the GS midsize luxury sedan. Billed by Lexus as the epitome of style and refinement, the facelifted GS gets a redesigned front and rear end, new variant and other available features.

It now has sharp-looking headlights, the single spindle grill and a more aggressive front bumper with rocker panel that gives the GS a coupe-inspired profile according to Lexus. The back also gets slight alterations with redone taillights and minor tweaks to the rear bumper. Completing the exterior revisions is a set of new wheel designs that can come in either 18- or 19-inches.

The interior largely carries over apart from the use of some new materials for the trim pieces, additional upholstery colors and new wood accents. The 12.3-inch infotainment screen now supports full screen mapping when paired with navigation while voice recognition and graphics have been improved added Lexus.

A nifty feature called Lexus Enform can be availed which apparently gives the GS ‘a voice’. Basically a system that can relay maintenance needs of the car, driver, users can remind themselves when will their car need servicing or in need of a repair. Those that want their GS to start itself and set the cabin temperature accordingly can also get the Lexus Enform Remote app which is available for both iOS and Android devices. With it, users can remotely start/stop the engine, activate the climate control, find your vehicle and monitor someone who is using your car.

Other features present in the updated GS include: larger 4.2-inch multi-information display and an analog clock that has GPS time zone functionality.

For the first time, an inline-four 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is now available for the midsize sedan. Available for the new GS 200t variant, it uses the engine derived from the NX 200t model and also puts out 244 PS and 349 Nm of torque. It is then mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It can only be had in 17-inch wheels that come with 235/50/R17 tires.

Present as always is the GS 350 which is still powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 316 PS along with 379 Nm of torque. The 6-speed automatic has been replaced however with the newer 8-speed unit. AWD capability is still available with the GS 350.

The hybrid GS 450h has also been carried over and is still driven by the 3.5-liter V6 that doles out 342 PS and 352 Nm of torque. The Continuously Variable Transmission is still the preferred gearbox for the hybrid model.

New features found on the refreshed GS midsize sedan include: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Intelligent High Beam, Radar Cruise Control, LED headlights, standard navigation on GS 350 and GS 450h models.

Other features available in the 2016 GS are: 10 airbags, Whiplash Injury Lessening front seats, enhanced Bluetooth connectivity, optional Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert and the optional 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system.
