Elio Motors P5 prototype revealed with new three-cylinder engine

A new-three wheeled vehicle will soon be introduced in the market after Elio Motors officially revealed the prototype version of the P5 at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show. Billed as the fifth-generation model, the P5 prototype features a sleeker, more aerodynamic exterior design, along with an improved interior finish and a new three-cylinder engine.

Starting from the outside, the P5 has a slightly longer front end that is both functional and appealing to the eyes. It has a futuristic and stylish look that also delivers better aerodynamics than its predecessor, the P4 according to Elio Motors. It also gets a side exhaust which will also be making its way in the final version of the car.

Inside, Elio Motors decided to improve the cabin by sprucing up its styling and functionality. It has slightly raised armrests for better comfort while the rear seat has been lowered by an inch for more headroom, and has more foam for a cushier feel.

Aesthetics-wise, it has red-colored inserts that match the exterior finish, reshaped A-pilar for better outside visibility, brushed metal trim on the dashboard for a more premium finish and a sturdier iPad holder.

Exact output rating was not revealed but the company did say it enables the car to have a 0-97 km/h time of 9.6 seconds and a top speed of more than 160 km/h. In addition, Elio Motors said that it will average 35.7 km/l on the highway.

“We are extremely proud to unveil the new Elio Motors prototype at the LA Auto Show today, among those who appreciate such a bold new approach to transportation. Adding our own specially-designed engine is the heart of our vehicle prototype and is a significant step forward in our commitment to producing a low-cost, highly fuel-efficient vehicle. This puts our company one step closer to production and our ultimate goals of reducing our country’s dependence on foreign oil, creating American manufacturing jobs and providing consumers with a low-cost alternative to traditional transportation choices,” said Paul Elio, CEO of Elio Motors.

Elio Motors plans to release the production version of the P5 by late 2016, and is looking at a US$6,800 retail pricetag.
