Next generation Mazda MX-5 to share platform with Alfa Romeo roadster
Mazda and Fiat signed the final agreement for their partnership to build an Alfa Romeo Roadster based on the MX-5. The announcement was initially made in May of last year where the two companies revealed their joint development effort. The roadsters for both brands will be built at Mazda’s plant in Hiroshima starting 2015.
Both roadsters will be based on the same chassis and rear-wheel drive drivetrain, but as earlier announced, their own proprietary engine will power each model.
No details have been revealed as to what role each manufacturer will play in the development of the vehicles. Both vehicles have made known their goals for the agreement; Mazda has revealed that it aims to revitalize enthusiasm through the deal, while Fiat is looking to achieve its goals to revive the Alfa Romeo brand by 2016.
