First few models destined for Japanese market only
The next-generation MX-5 will grace the open road as Mazda Motor Corporation recently commenced its production at their Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima.
The first few models will only be intended for release for the Japanese market as the company plans to sell the all-new MX-5 by June. Overseas sale of the 2016 MX-5 will begin soon after.
In addition, Mazda will also be launching a website on March 20, 2015 that is dedicated for Japanese clients that are interested in pre-purchasing or inquiring about the said roadster.
Originally revealed back in September 2014, the 4th generation MX-5 utilizes Mazda's Kodo-Soul of Motion design language and sits on the brand's SkyActiv-1 chassis, making it 100kg lighter than the previous generation.
As previously reported, US-bound MX-5s will get the 2.0-liter SkyActiv engine as standard which generates 157 PS and 200 Nm of torque. It can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The other available engine is the 1.5-liter SkyActiv unit that produces 131 PS at 7000 rpm with 150 Nm of torque at 4800 rpm and gets the 6-speed manual gearbox. Mazda has not yet stated where the 1.5-liter model be offered.
