Mercedes-Benz recently took the wraps off of the GLE Coupe, the German automaker's rendition of a crossover. Originally to be called the ML Coupe, it now carries the name GLE Coupe after Mercedes-Benz announced to overhaul its automotive nomenclature by 2015.
Labeled by the company as a sporty coupe with the attributes of a robust SUV, its overall appearance features sharp lines and angular shapes. The front end has a single louvre chrome design that is accompanied by LED headlights. The hood has a forward-sloping look which according to the German automaker brands the car as a sporty model. The side displays the car's contours and low greenhouse, along with a set of standard 20-inch wheels. The 21-inch and 22-inch sets are optional for the GLE Coupe.
The rear is reminiscent of the S-Class as it has a design line that is originally used on the luxury sedan. It has thin three-dimensional taillights that is accented by a wide chrome trim that is fitted above the plate holder. Twin tailpipes integrated onto the rear bumper complete the exterior appearance of the GLE Coupe.
Inside, the cabin can be trimmed in silver, aluminum or wood accents and it comes standard with sport seats, a sport steering wheel covered in black Nappa leather and an infotainment display. As an option, the interior trim can also be had in either carbon fiber or piano black.
Powering the GLE Coupe are a range of gasoline- and diesel-powered engines. First up is the diesel GLE 350 d 4MATIC that produces 258 PS and a torque pull of 620 Nm at 1600 rpm. Next is the GLE 400 4MATIC that is equipped with a twin-turbo direct injection V6 that has been rated at 333 PS and 480 Nm at 1400 rpm. At the top of the range is the GLE 450 AMG which is also fitted with a twin-turbo V6 but now produces 367 PS and 520 Nm of torque at 1400 rpm.
A variety of standard equipment is available on the range topping GLE 450 AMG which includes the AIRMATIC suspension, an adaptive damping system and an automatic lowering function that lessens ride height at high speeds. It is also fitted with a 9-speed automatic gearbox that has the brand's Dynamic Select System that features five-modes: Individual, Comfort, Slippery, Sport and Sport+. Individual program's the car to a driver's custom preference, Comfort relaxes the ride quality of the car, Slippery optimizes the car on low traction roads while Sport and Sport+ enables the driver to maximize the power and handling capabilities of the GLE 450 AMG.
