German automaker reveals new flagship

Mercedes-Benz has just revealed the new S-Class, promising more of what made the flagship great for their customers.

"Rather than being about safety or aesthetics, power or efficiency, comfort or dynamism, our aspirations were 'the best or nothing' in every respect,” said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The new S-Class gets the designation W222, and features a fully redesigned look, continuing on the design cues carried by the latest models in the Mercedes line up. Mercedes gave the new S-Class more prominence in the larger headlamps, an enlarged front grille, dynamic creases and edges, as well as fully revised rear end.

What's unique is that Mercedes hasn't installed a single light bulb in the S-Class, as it features full LED lighting. 500 LEDs take care of illuminating the road, the car, interior and the trunk.

Inside, Mercedes designers gave the S-Class a luxurious cabin fit for a flagship utilizing premium leather and other materials. The interior of the car also gets the latest in technology, with seats that have “hot stone” massage functions and the premium entertainment system. Customers will be able to specify the “First Class Rear” option as well as a Burmester surround sound system, lending more luxury for the rear occupants than standard variants.

 Interior

Customers will have 4 variants to choose from; two of which are hybrids. The S500 is the mainstay variant, powered by a 4.7 liter V8 that develops 455 PS and 700 Nm. There is also the S350 BlueTEC which comes with a 258 PS, 620 Nm 3.5 liter V6. The hybrid variants include the S400 Hybrid with a 3.5L V6 and an electric motor that combine for 306 PS and 370 Nm, as well as the S300 BlueTEC Hybrid with a 2.1 liter Inline-4 with an electric motor that combines for 204 PS and 500 Newton meters of torque. Mercedes also promised a plug-in hybrid variant of the S500 to come later on.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class also comes with an advanced suspension system that incorporates Road Surface Scan and Magic Body Control. These advanced technologies that are being made available as options in the V8 models read the road ahead, automatically adjusting the ADS and Airmatic suspension system to deal with it.
