Current generation Mini finally gets a soft top
Nearly two years after the standard Mini Cooper (F56) was released, the company has added a soft top version of its popular hatchback. Officially called the Mini Cooper Convertible, the gains in its dimensions promise a more practical package.
From the outside, the convertible variant of the Cooper visually resembles the standard 3-door model with the sole difference being the retractable roof. Mini also kept the Cooper as light as they can. Mini favored the use of a soft top instead of the heavier metal folding roof. Its soft top is electronically retractable and can be opened or closed in 18 seconds. The roof can be put up or folded while in motion, at speeds of up to 30 km/h.
Based on the new UKL platform that's shared with BMW, the Mini Cooper Convertible is 98 mm longer, 44 mm wider and 7 mm taller than its predecessor. The dimensions for the new Cooper Convertible measure in at 3821 mm long, 1727 mm wide and 1415 mm tall. The wheelbase is 28 mm longer than before. As a result, the Mini Cooper Convertible's cargo capacity has been improved.
Mini claims the cargo capacity has increased by 25% over the previous generation model. Cargo space now stands at 215 liters when the roof is up and 160 liters when it’s folded. The loading area increases by 8 mm.
Like the Mini Cooper, the Cooper Convertible will be sharing the same engines as the rest of the Mini line-up. It starts off with the three cylinder 1.5-liter turbo engine rated at 136 PS and 220 Nm of torque and up to 230 Nm with overboost. The Cooper Convertible S version comes with a larger four cylinder 2.0-liter turbo developing 192 PS and 280 Nm of torque. Like the three cylinder model, the S comes with an overboost function, delivering up to 300 Nm of torque. A three cylinder 1.5-liter turbodiesel version is also available.
Other engines to join the Cooper Convertible line-up will be a 1.2-liter gas engine, a 2.0 turbodiesel and a John Cooper Works tuned 2.0 turbocharged gas engine.
