SUVs Sales Overcome Fuel Cost Spike

Sport utility vehicles or SUVs became popular in the early 90's as a status symbol. Since then there were a lot of SUVs introduced in the market fitting every budget, demographic and lifestyle. At motor shows journalist, executives, and car enthusiasts spend most of their time in throngs around the many SUVs on display. Almost everyone dreams of owning an SUV as it gives prestige and a statement of lifestyle and fulfillment.

However when fuel prices peaked during the start of the third quarter this year, vehicle sales in most markets particularly in the United States dropped significantly, to which SUV sales was primarily affected as people switched from gas guzzler SUVs to more fuel efficient vehicles and hybrids. In contrast, soaring fuel cost did not put the brakes on increasing SUV sales in the Philippines. September year-to-date figures from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) show that total SUVs sold accounted for 16,481 units. Furthermore, compact and midsize SUVs continue to dominate sales with 92% against large size SUVs.

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines' Froilan Dytianquin, Assistant Vice-president for Marketing Services commented that "I believe that SUVs in our market remain to be relevant unlike in the U.S. since most of the SUVs available locally are powered by fuel efficient gasoline and diesel engines. In addition, SUVs in our market continue to be practical given its higher stance which enables it to easily maneuver bad roads and also pass through flooded roads during the rainy season"
