Bill sponsored by Rep. Win Gatchalian gets MMDS support
A few weeks ago, Valenzuela Congressman Win Gatchalian sponsored House Bill No. 5098, which mandates new car buyers to present a notarized affidavit proving that their newly acquired vehicle has an existing parking space dedicated for it when not in use.
Tasked with ensuring the smooth flow of traffic in the metro, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) last Friday has expressed support for this bill.
“The volume of vehicles on the road can no longer be accommodated by our limited road network. However, this should be compensated by an efficient comfortable and acceptable mass public transport system,” said Emerson Carlos, MMDA assistant general manager for operations.
In a recent news article we made, both members of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and Assoication of Vehicle Importers and Distributors have reported that their sales have reached 196,740 units as of end September. Based on our projection, sales are likely to exceed 270,000 units by end of 2014. Industry members are looking at 300,000 units within reach by 2015.
“Traffic congestion in the capital is worsened by the idle vehicles parked on the sides of streets, hampering the flow of automobile and foot traffic. Any financially able purchaser of a motor vehicle can be presumed to be able to provide a parking facility for his vehicle,” said Gatchalian.
