Special lane for emergency vehicles eyed by the MMDA

Emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and ambulances may soon get to their destination without getting trapped in traffic should a new proposal by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) be implemented.

The lead agency in charge of traffic in Metro Manila is considering assigning a special lane on EDSA and other major thoroughfares specifically for ambulances, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles by the first quarter of 2017.

This, according to MMDA General Manager Thomas Orbos, is so that these emergency vehicles may respond swiftly to crisis situations that need immediate attention.

Orbos did stress that these lanes will also be available to regular motorists and will only be cleared by traffic enforcers after Metrobase has relayed that an emergency situation is happening.

“We assure that the MMDA will be able to provide our riders, through the assistance of our Metrobase, to help them pass through these special lanes. We will inform traffic enforcers that a certain emergency incident is happening,” said Orbos.

Not all emergency vehicles will be allowed to use it. Accreditation needs to be granted by the MMDA so that this privilege is not abused.

Orbos added that these lanes will not be used by VIPs looking to avoid traffic.

“We would like to reiterate that these special lanes must not be abused and must be utilized for truly emergency purposes,” added Orbos.
