More than a twin

Model overview

The BRZ is the other third of the project between the Subaru and Toyota, the others being the Toyota 86 and the Scion FR-S. This compact sportscar features a front engine rear wheel drive layout, a 2+2 configuration, and a lively 2.0L boxer motor. The BRZ is only the 2nd car to ever be rear wheel drive from Subaru, the other one being the Subaru 1500 from 1954.

Exterior design and dimensions

In terms of dimensions, the BRZ is virtually identical to its twin from Toyota. What's different is the front and rear end, as the Subaru BRZ gets a different front bumper, different headlamps and a slightly different rear.

Interior design and features

The Subaru BRZ gets a very driver oriented interior. There are a pair of leather wrapped reclining sport seats, with two seats in the back for passengers. Staring at the driver is a large tachometer flanked by a speedometer on the left. There are digital displays for pertinent vehicle information.

The BRZ gets a 2DIN AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with Aux input and USB connectivity. Also standard is a push start system, cruise control, heated seats and dual zone airconditioning.

Powertrain and suspension

Powering the Subaru BRZ is a 2.0-liter Boxer-4 motor. Unlike previous naturally aspirated versions, the BRZ's engine produces a heftier 200 horsepower. The powerful N/A motor gets either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

The BRZ gets MacPherson struts in front and double wishbone suspension in the back. Also, a Torsen LSD is standard.

Contributing Editor Inigo Roces thinks there's a difference in the way the BRZ drives when compared to the 86. Watch out for the story later on.

Safety and security

For safety, the BRZ has 7 airbags, 4-channel/4-sensor ABS and Vehicle Stability Control. There are also ISOFIX mounts to secure child seats so everyone can get in on this hot ride.

Variants, prices and colors

Unusually, Motor Image Pilipinas, the official distributor of Subaru, have priced both the manual and automatic versions identically at PhP 1,928,000
