NAIA and Skyway infrastructure projects delayed by months

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced that the deadline of two major infrastructure projects have to be pushed back after construction encountered problems including right-of-way issues.

According to the MMDA, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) elevated expressway and the Skyway Stage 3 will not be finished on time as reported by contractor D.M. Consunji, Inc.

“The NAIA elevated expressway will be delayed for five months. It will not make it for the APEC Summit as they will finish the project in April, 2016,” said MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino.

It was initially slated to finish by October and be ready when delegates of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit arrive.

Aside from right-of-way problems, congested drainage systems at the corner of Domestic and NAIA Road have been causing construction delays.

The Skyway Stage 3 will also be delayed and will finish by April 2018 instead of the initial December 2017 deadline.

“The officials were explaining the need to construct a ramp downward Buendia-Skyway to transfer a drainage system and a platform of the Philippine National Railways. Their construction would take three months,” said Tolentino.

The added work shall cause traffic on Osmeña Highway, Araneta Avenue in Quezon City as lanes will be closed during construction of the ramp.

MMDA Chairman Tolentino is asking the public to expect traffic conditions in these areas to remain the same during the extended construction period.
