Ford celebrates 50 years of the GT-H with limited-run Shelby Mustang
A new Shelby Mustang will soon be gracing the 2016 New York International Auto Show. It won't be your typical Shelby however as it will be limited-run model that pays homage to the original 'Rent-A-Racer' program set up by Ford, Shelby and Hertz in the 1960s.
Simply called the 2016 Shelby Mustang GT-H, Ford described the new-generation GT-H as a 'very classic, muscular car with performance capabilities'. According to Doug White, Ford Performance Parts Manager, the goal of the limited-edition car was to give drivers a dose of fun on their travels.
“Our goal was to give everyone a chance to add some fun to their travel with a distinctive American pony car. So Ford Performance and Shelby American sharpened the handling, improved the performance, sweetened the exhaust note and added distinctive Hertz styling to the Mustang. Anyone who rents a limited edition Ford Shelby GT-H will enjoy a very special driving experience,” said White.
Starting with its exterior package, it gets unique Shelby components like the carbon fiber front splitter, ventilated polycarbonate hood, new rocker panels with carbon fiber accent plates, rear spoiler and a faux GT-H gas cap. Aesthetically, it its finished in black and has GT-H yellow striping.
Matte-black 19-inch alloys wrapped in Michelin Sport tires provide the necessary grip for the 2016 Shelby Mustang GT-H. It does however, benefit from a staggered tire setup. The front axle gets 255/40 rubber while the rear has 275/40 tires.
Detailed images of the car's interior were not provided though the company did say it will get unique Shelby GT-H trim pieces. Model-specific floor mats, sill plates, headrest cover and dash plaque will be present inside the 2016 Shelby Mustang GT-H.
Under the hood, is the familiar 5.0-liter Coyote V8. Exact output figures were not revealed yet but Ford did mention it will have cat-back exhaust system. Moreover, it will also have a GT-H engine plaque and engine cap kit. Each model will be mated to an automatic transmission. Delivering better cornering ability comes courtesy of a handling pack from Ford Performance.
All 140 models will be built at Shelby American's facility in Las Vegas and will be exclusively destined for Hertz rental fleets across the US.
“For nearly 100 years, understanding our customers’ needs and interests has remained at the forefront of our business. This special 50th anniversary edition of the Ford Shelby GT-H not only underscores our commitment to deliver a fun and personalized rental experience, but it also has helped Hertz become the premium brand it is today. It’s sure to be an exhilarating drive for anyone who has the chance to get behind the wheel of this one-of-a-kind ride,” said Matt Jauchius, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing oOficer at Hertz Global Holdings.
It is set to make its world debut on March 23, 2016.
