The 2017 Impreza is styled around the Subaru’s new design language which was previewed with the 5-door and Sedan concepts shown at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show and 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show. It is based on a larger vehicle measures 2685 mm long, 1778 mm wide, 1455 mm tall and sits on a 2670 mm wheelbase.

On the outside, a modernized version of the brand’s signature hexagonal grill and hawk-eye headlights highlight the front, while prominent wheel arches give it an athletic stance. Flowing lines extend the character line all the way through the rear to give it a more dynamic appeal. Higher variants will get LED headlights coupled with 'Konoji' LED daytime running lights (DRL).

Inside, the larger C-segment sedan promises more space for occupants. It carries the dynamic exterior look to its interior styling with outward flowing lines to project even more space. It still maintains an excellent greenhouse despite the sleeker design maintaining a good all-around view from the inside. It comes with new driver-assist suite, new multimedia connectivity such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Near Field Communication (NFC).

Under the hood is an improved version of the FB20 2.0-liter boxer-4 which now gets direct injection and other enhancements giving it a bump of 5 PS to 155 PS. It is still mated to a Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) which has a 7-speed manual mode accessible via the gear lever or steering wheel mounted paddles.

Sport models will be equipped with Active Torque Vectoring which were debuted in the WRX and WRX STI performance models.

The new frameworks with optimized cross sections and highly stiffened joints between structures significantly enhance straight-line stability, agility and ride comfort while suppressing noise, vibration and harshness to a degree not seen in the compact class. The new platform promises a 70% increase in rigidity of the total body structure. The reconfigured suspension resulted in a lower center of gravity for better dynamism and driving feel. Body roll has been significantly reduced by 50% with the relocation of the rear stabilizer bar to the body.

The available EyeSight safety suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Pre-Collision Braking and Lane Departure and Sway Warning, plus a Lane Keep Assist function. Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are also available. Also new are available Steering Responsive Headlights, which can illuminate curves as the vehicle steers into them, and High Beam Assist, which automatically activates and deactivates the high beam headlamps based on driving conditions.

New driver-assist technologies come in the form of Reverse Automatic Braking and the display of steering lines for the standard rear vision camera. Reverse Automatic Braking can apply the vehicle’s brakes if an obstacle is detected while reversing. A new 4-way Tire Pressure Monitoring System can detect pressure drops at individual wheels.

The 2017 Subaru Impreza Sedan and 5-Door models are expected to arrive at North American dealers by late 2016. Asian markets are expected to follow suit not long after.
