Genesis combines luxury with fuel-cell tech in new GV80 concept
Luxury SUVs could soon be powered by hydrogen after Genesis recently arrived at the 2017 New York International Auto Show with an all-new concept. Called the GV80 concept, it is the brand's first attempt in making an SUV concept that features a sleek exterior coupled to a high-tech cabin and powertrain.
Finished in 'Ice Granite', the GV80 concept features the brand's 'Athletic Elegance' design language that blends versatility and modern design into one. Up front, the concept gets the brand's signature grill that comes with a diamond motif mesh design. Complementing it are the horizontally-shaped quad headlights that have a jewel-like finish. In addition, the lower valence has an aerodynamic design which channels air towards the rocker panels.
“The GV80 Concept is a SUV that alludes to the confidence and evolution of the Genesis brand – its design is timeless, with an understated yet dynamic overall surface complexity,” said Luc Donckerwolke, head of Genesis Design.
Shod in the wheel wells are five-spoke 23-inch alloy wheels that feature an intricate design that makes the wheels not only lightweight, but also allow for better cooling for the disc brakes. Like the front fascia, the rear gets slim quad taillights that elongate towards the rear quarter panels.
Inside, the GV80 incorporates a 2+2 seat layout and comes with high-quality leather and metal trim pieces. Immediately seen on the dashboard is the wide 22-inch curved OLED screen that has two zones, one for the driver and one for the front passenger. The large monitor can display the multi-info display, navigation, as well as points of interests for the driver.
Further down, the center console features a large capacitive touchscreen with a concave gorilla glass touchpad and metal wheel. It even comes with handwriting recognition which adds a personal touch. The rear occupants each have their own seats and rear entertainment system. Topping it all off is the cargo area which comes with dark gray leather, ash wood and suede.
Genesis did not go into detail about the GV80's powertrain but they did mention that it uses the latest in plug-in hyrodgen fuel cell technology.
“There is a unique energy and diverse global culture to New York that is fitting for Genesis, and we are excited to unveil the GV80 Concept here. This concept is an important milestone for the brand to share our vision of the future, introducing a further expansion of our product portfolio,” said Manfred Fitzgerald, head of Genesis brand.
The GV80 concept will highly likely become the basis of Genesis' first production luxury SUV.
