Porsche to revive the 718 name for new-generation Boxster, Cayman
Porsche has just announced that 2016 will be the year where the next-generation Boxster and Cayman will be making their official debut. Apart from being completely new, the two models will also have new names.
They will be officially called the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. The added monicker is actually a tribute by the company to the 1957 718 sports car that won several races in its hayday. In addition, Porsche stated that the 2 cars will have similar styling and powertrain characteristics. Both will even be driven by a turbocharged flat-four engine.
When both cars arrive, the roadster model will be priced higher than the standard coupe added Porsche.
The original 718 was the direct successor of the 550 Spyder; the model that was made famous (or infamous?) by actor, James Dean. Described by Porsche as having a powerful and efficient flat-four during its time, the 718 achieved first place victories at both the 1959 and 1960 Italian Targa Florio race in Sicily. Its more powerful derivative, the 718 RSK, won a significant class victory during the 1958 24 Hours of Le Mans with its 142 PS engine.
Porsche has yet to reveal the exact launch date of the 2016 Boxster 718 and Cayman 718.
