The Peugeot 308 R Hybrid is a 500 PS, 730 Nm hybrid hot hatch
Peugeot plans to change on how sport hybrids or hot hatches are perceived as the automaker recently revealed the 308 R Hybrid. Described by the company as 'the compact hatchback that drives like a supercar', it features a radical-looking exterior, a performance-driving oriented interior and a very potent hybrid powertrain.
Superficially, the 308 R Hybrid is finished in a 2-tone paint scheme that is originally used on the standard R but gets revised front and rear bumpers along with a different set of alloy wheels. Also differing for the hybrid variant is the omission of the dual exhaust pipes as it only gets a single pipe.
Inside, it features Peugeot's i-Cockpit layout that is paired with a driver-focused finish. The cabin is finished in gray and is accented by wood grain trim at the center console along with what looks like a soft-touch material that is placed on the dashboard. It has leather-clad bucket seats all around while the door handles are also wrapped in the same leather material.
Powering the 308 R Hybrid is a 1.6-liter inline-four THP S&S engine and two electric motors that are powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. The turbocharged engine produces 270 PS while the front and rear electric motors are both rated at 115 PS, giving it a total output of 500 PS and 730 Nm. The powertrain is then mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox that comes with paddle shifters.
It has a total of 4 available drive modes, the first of which is Zev Mode which only puts out 170 PS from the electric motors. It is then followed by Road Mode which is rated at 300 PS and 400 Nm thanks to use of the combustion engine and the rear electric motor that only generates 30 PS.
The third setting is Sport Mode which bumps up the power to 400 PS and 530 Nm as the rear electric motor is now at full capacity while the front electric unit provides an additional 15 PS. It is only at Hot Lap Mode where the full 500 PS and 730 Nm of torque is released by the hybrid powertrain, allowing it to sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in 4 seconds flat.
