Bus lanes to be firmly imposed starting Monday January 18, 2016

The orange plastic cones may have served as a guide to indicate which are the bus lanes and which are the ones for private vehicles.

After months of getting used to it straddling several parts of EDSA, their purpose will be more strictly realized beginning Monday, January 18, 2016.

According to Cabinet Secretary and traffic czar Jose Rene Almendras, the full implementation of the ‘bus lanes’ will be initially enforced on the stretch of EDSA southbound between Shaw Boulevard and Guadalupe.

This is to let public utility buses (PUBs) move a lot faster and get to their destination quicker as they ferry passengers.

The Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be responsible for the monitoring and strict implementation of the policy in the said area.

Only vehicles turning right into any intersection perpendicular to EDSA can drive along the bus lane.

“We will be tolerant in the first few days until people get used to it. If they will not cooperate we will start issuing tickets,” Almendras said.

These ‘cones’ divide EDSA, three lanes for private vehicles and two lanes for PUBs.

“We want to encourage the high occupancy vehicles to move faster. So that’s why we are going to do it. And were doing it with the plastic barriers before we put the cement separators, then we can adjust accordingly,” added Almendras.
