Performance-tuned versions of the S60 and V60
Polestar, the official tuning partner of Swedish automaker Volvo has announced the global debut of the performance-tuned versions of the 2014 Volvo S60 and V60. For the first time, the V60 will be available in Polestar trim in homage to the racing 850 of British Touring Car Championship fame.
The Polestar versions of the recently updated sedan and wagon from the Swedish carmaker will be sold in four continents around the world next year. First markets to receive the S60 and V60 Polestar will be Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, and the US; other markets and final production numbers have not yet been revealed.
“We are proud to present the S60 and V60 Polestar. A car developed for those who share our passion at Polestar: That driving really matters and that a true driver’s car should enable you to enjoy driving all year, on all roads and in all weather conditions. This is a driver’s car for real life,” said Christian Dahl, CEO of Polestar.
Based on the updated Volvo S60 and V60, the Polestar versions have been undergoing development in various conditions which include twisty mountain roads of the Autobahn and test tracks from the south of Europe to the frozen north of Sweden to assure year-round performance for the factory-tuned cars.
Polestar performance engineering has totally reworked the cars to improve the vehicle’s handling, engine performance, aerodynamics and interior.
Handling modifications include: chassis rigidity modifications, stiffer suspension with Öhlins shock absorbers, 20” Polestar wheels, and uprated 371mm front brakes with six-pot Brembo calipers. Aerodynamic upgrades were done with data from tests in the Volvo Cars wind tunnel, Polestar front splitters, rear diffuser and a rear spoiler were fitted to increase downforce.
The engine receives a generous upgrade with a Polestar-tuned ECU, a new twin-scroll turbo and intercooler, 2.5-inch stainless steel exhaust system, and some minor engine tweaks to achieve a 25 PS and 20 Nm increase from the top-spec R version to 350 PS @ 5700 rpm and 500 Nm @ 2800 rpm. The result is a more responsible and more aggressively sounding car befitting of the blue Polestar badge. The engine is mated to a performance optimized six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters transferring power to the Polestar developed Haldex all-wheel drive system.
Polestar colors have found their way to the interior to reflect the performance as well. Parts like the steering wheel, seats and trimmings, receive the Polestar treatment increase driver support and control, while providing tuner car aesthetics.
