New resolution seeks to lift ban of trikes on EDSA

The Quezon City government recently passed a resolution that requests that the MMDA ban on tricycles from operating and plying on EDSA be lifted.

According to a report by GMA Network's online news site, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino cites passenger safety as the key issue regarding the resolution to allow tricycles on Metro Manila's primary arterial road.

“For safety reasons, hindi talaga sila pwedeng tumakbo sa malalaking lansangan,” Tolentino told GMA. “Tingnan natin pero sa akin, offhand, ay baka hindi talaga pwede.”

The resolution was passed with QC 2nd District Councilor Eufemio Lagumbay as its main proponent, aiming to increase the destinations tricycles can reach within the city. With the proposed expansion of roads that tricycles will be allowed on, Lagumbay seeks to increase the potential for income of over 24 thousand registered tricycles in the city.

The new resolution contrasts with a 1990 MMDA Ordinance and a 2007 DILG circular that specifically prohibits tricycles on major national roads (i.e. EDSA) for safety reasons.

Unusually, the DILG circular gives the city government permission to allow public transport vehicles to use national roads if there are no alternate routes available.
