Land Rover testing prototype remote controlled vehicle using smartphone
Land Rover has just showcased a remote-controlled Range Rover Sport that will allow the driver to step out and control the vehicle’s steering, accelerator and brakes as well as changing from high and low range by simply using a smartphone app.
The app only allows the Range Rover Sport to travel a maximum speed of 6 kilometers per hour but in a challenging off-road situation this gives the driver the ability to become his/her own spotter as well by going out of the vehicle to check the terrain directly in front or under the vehicle to make sure that it is safe to proceed.
Getting in and out of tight parking spaces is another task this app and remote-controlled unit was designed for. In case a vehicle has parked too close for the driver of the Range Rover Sport to get in, the driver can simply launch the app and make the vehicle back up on its own.
The remote control function works for as long as the driver is within 10 meters of a vehicle and a smart key is detected. The vehicle will automatically stop if the driver is out of range or get too close.
Land Rover’s research team has also incorporated a ‘Multi-Point Turn’ feature that allows the system to perform a three-point turn.
Equipped with sensors that continuously scan for available space, pedestrians and other object in the way, the Range Rover Sport will autonomously select the gear, steer, accelerate and brake while making as many forward and backward movements in order to complete the 180-degree turn.
"Getting a car out of a tricky parking manoeuvre can be a stressful experience for any driver. A Remote Control car, or a vehicle that can autonomously turn in the road, demonstrates how we could use these new technologies to reduce the tedious parts of driving and improve road safety.

The same sensors and systems that will help an autonomous car make the right decisions, will assist the driver and enhance the experience to help prevent accidents. Autonomous car technologies will not take away the fun of driving."
