To be Korean automaker's first attempt in North America

Choi Johng-sik, CEO of Ssangyong Motor Company, had recently told reporters the automaker's expansion plans in the West. During the Paris Motor Show, the CEO said that he aims to be able to enter the US market by the year 2020.

“America is very, very competitive, so we need to build a good brand. That's why we're now preparing completely new products," said Choi to Automotive News. With this announcement, it is set to be the Korean automaker's first foray into North America. However, this is not Ssangyong's first time selling cars in the western hemisphere as it also sells cars in Europe and some parts of Latin America. The only region Ssangyong cars are unavailable is in North America (Canada, Mexico, USA).

Ssangyong Tivoli XL

For Ssangyong's plans for North America, Choi says that they are keen to enter the region with two small crossovers, namely the Tivoli and the Korando. By the year 2020, the Tivoli is slated for a minor model change while the Korando, a full redesign. In a different report by Mexican magazine Automovil, Ssangyong's strategy will revolve around value for money by offering a lot of standard equipment, unique designs and a low price tag compared to the Korando and Tivoli's contemporaries.

During the motor show, Choi went as far as mentioning the details for the North America-spec Ssangyongs. The company is currently developing two low displacement turbocharged engines specifically for the region. First is a 1.5 liter mill with a projected output of 162 PS while the other is a 2.0 liter unit with Ssangyong estimating power figures at 220 PS.
