New EV battery by Toyota to extend range, battery life of electric cars

Toyota Motor Corp. is planning to develop a cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) battery, which will extend the range and battery life by 15-percent in the next few years.

"Lithium-ion battery is a key technology for electrifying cars, and there is a clear need, going forward, for improving this technology and its performance even more," said Hisao Yamashige, a battery technology researcher at Toyota.

According to the report, Toyota engineers were able to witness the behavior of lithium ions inside the electrodes in real time with the help of techniques developed by a publicly-financed Japanese laboratory as well as four universities based in Japan.

With this scientific breakthrough, the automaker would now be able to produce new designs which will prevent the lithium ions from moving unsteadily and crowding in the electrodes. A matter that limits both the vehicle range and battery life today which may lead to overheating.

EVs and plug-in hybrids' automakers, including Toyota, are now trying to develop a more advanced battery technology to provide longer range and battery life.

In relation to this, the Japanese automaker will also launch the Prius Prime, a new plug-in hybrid vehicle which applies the gasoline-electric hybrid technology.
