Toyota's perennial best-seller has been updated in Thailand. For 2016, the Toyota Vios gets a host of welcome changes that aim to keep it competitive in its segment.

The exterior remains relatively unchanged save for a very subtle change in its foglight housings. The interior too is mostly a carryover from the current model but gets a new arrangement for its automatic climate control system in the top of the line model, as well as a new gear lever for the automatic transmission. While visual changes are minor, most of the changes made for the Vios are found under the hood and in its drivetrain. For the Thai market, the Vios gains a new top of the line variant called the Exclusive (pictured above) which adds new wheels, a bodykit, reshaped foglight housings and LED daytime running lights.

For the 1.5 liter model, the familiar 1NZ-FE retires after powering Vios models for the past decade. Taking its place is the new 2NR-FE, now packing Dual VVT-i technology for “improved response and efficiency." The improvements don't stop there as this model update drops the old 4-speed automatic. For 2016, the Vios now gets a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a seven speed mode. With the combination of the new engine and transmission, the 2016 Vios promises to deliver better fuel efficiency compared to the current model. The 1.3 variants also get the new NR engine and these engines are built in the new engine plant in Indonesia.

For the Thai market, stability control is standard across the range, on top of anti-lock brakes with EBD. The 2016 Toyota Vios is set for its public debut in this year's Bangkok Motor Show.
