Bill filed requiring bars to assist drunken motorist in getting safe ride

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago believes that ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ and her latest bill is proof of that.

Senate Bill No. 2928 or the Act Providing for Alternative Transportation Assistance seeks to mandate bars and establishments licensed to sell alcoholic beverages to assist drunken patrons in getting a ride home.

The bill cites data from the World Health Organization stating that road accidents are the second leading cause of death and 40% of these are caused by drivers who are behind the wheel while also being under the influence of alcohol or other narcotics.

Sen. Santiago’s bill seeks to prevent these accidents from ever happening instead of punishing culprits after the act.

If passed into law, owners and operators of bars and establishments licensed to sell alcoholic beverages shall first display conspicuous signs indicating that one should ‘not drink and drive’ but if you have, management will assist you in placing a call to find a suitable and safe means of transportation home.

A minimum of one call shall then be made by anyone from the said establishment to a local transportation service or if none is available, allow the patron to make a call in order for him/her to secure a safe ride home.
