Tron-like highway promotes sustainable road system
Artist Daan Roosegaarde and Heijmans Insfrastructure have debuted their Tron-like solar-powered glowing highway in Oss, Netherlands.
The solar-powered glowing highway is part of the Smart Highway Project, a sustainable road system for safer driving specially during the night. Roosegaarde's design is composed of solar-powered glowing lines that are place along the edge of highway N329. The glowing lines provide drivers with three strips of green light along the highway.
During the day, the glowing lines absorb solar energy and when the sun goes down it can illuminate the highway for up to eight hours. As of this writing, the first test of the solar-powered glowing highway turned out to be a success, extending the project to other areas of the Netherlands.
