Rep. Lito Atienza blames the MMDA and LTFRB for traffic problems
As the traffic condition in Metro Manila worsens, it seems like even members of the legislative branch of the government aren’t impervious to the horrendous effects it has on our nation’s productivity.
Buhay Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza has laid the blame squarely on two agencies of the government, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) while specifically citing the amount of money we lose everyday as Filipinos spend time stuck in traffic.
Using Bangkok, Thailand as an example, Atienza pointed out how their traffic situation was considered as one of the worst globally but slowly they have been able to manage it and one of the solutions was turning side streets into one-way traffic during rush hours.
“Billions of pesos and thousands of man hours are lost every day due to congestion. These stop and go situations all over have become common occurrences. This is further compounded by the uncontrolled number of buses and jeepneys that use main thoroughfares as their terminals,” said Atienza.
The former Manila mayor says both agencies have ‘failed miserably’ in their mandate of managing traffic.
