Urges DOTC to have a mechanism for efficient tolling system
Rep. Alfredo B. Benitez (3rd District, Negros Occidental) is seeking a congressional inquiry to establish a unified electronic toll collection system in the tollways and expressways in Luzon.
According to Benitez, expressways meant ease traffic in national roads and provide faster travel from the city to various provinces in Luzon. However, motorists are hampered by the traffic which occurs near the toll gates.
With this, Benitez believes that a unified electronic toll collection system would help ease traffic at toll plazas. He added that the E-Pass system in the Southern Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and the EC-Tag sytem in the Northern Luzon Expressway (NLEX) lessens the manual transaction of paying toll fees.
Benitez also asks the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) to have a mechanism for efficient tolling system.
"It behooves the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) to come up with a mechanism for efficient tolling system to include, among others, requiring a unified electronic tagging or ticketing system among all of the expressways in the region,” said Benitez.
He concluded that having a unified electronic toll collection system would eliminate congestion especially during the holidays.
Deadline set for NLEX-SCTEX toll integration
Senator Franklin Drilon likewise imposed a deadline for tollway operators of the NLEX and SCTEX to speed up their integration for more efficient toll collection in the said expressways. He stressed that this will lessen the burden on motorists plying the toll roads by stopping at less tollgates thereby saving travel time and fuel.
Drilon met with officials of the DOTC, Toll Regulatory Board (DOTC), tollway operators MNTC, MPTC and BCDA to iron out issues in preparation for the integration agreement signing on February 12 in his office.
He wants the integration completed before the Holy Week holiday rush to avoid the same 11-hour Christmas holiday ordeal he personally went through.
